Tokens
Tokens are rare, one-time-use special abilities that transcend the normal rules of the game. Where coins are mundane currency, tokens are magic.
Design Principles
- Rare — you hold only a few at any given time
- Powerful — each token bypasses or overrides a normal game constraint
- Earned, not bought — tokens are triggered by extraordinary play, not purchased
- Session-defining — a well-timed token can save a desperate situation or enable a spectacular play
Token Types
Magic Swap
Works like Swap Ends but free — no coin cost, at any selection length. Its value increases as the game progresses and long selections become harder to build (especially in Lock Down mode where locked tiles fragment the board).
Double Play
Requires a selection. Targets the first selected tile and allows it to be used in two separate word plays instead of one. The tile is visually recessed (negative relief) to indicate its special status. After the first word play using it, it returns to surface level for one final use.
Triple Play
Same concept as Double Play, but the tile can be used in three separate word plays. It starts at two levels of negative relief, rises one level after each play, and returns to surface level for its final use.
ATM
A one-time coin bailout. Requires a selection (all tokens must target a selection), but doesn't inspect it — simply adds coins to your account. The ATM is your hail Mary when coins are exhausted and you need one more action to reach a playable word.
The Token Dock
Tokens are accessed via the Token Dock — a DayZ-style slot bar at the bottom of the screen. Up to 10 slots, each activated by pressing a number key (1–9, 0). Each slot shows:
- The keyboard number
- A token icon
- The token name and count (e.g., "Triple Play: 2")
- Empty slots show "(empty)"
Coins vs Tokens
| Coins | Tokens | |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Currency (fungible, spendable in increments) | Abilities (discrete, one-shot) |
| Acquisition | Earned regularly through word plays | Earned rarely through exceptional plays |
| Power level | Bounded by the action fee system | Rule-breaking; bypass normal constraints |
| Scarcity | Moderate — accumulates but drains over time | High — few in inventory at any time |
| Strategic role | Incremental optimization | Clutch saves and spectacular combos |
Token Earning
Tokens are awarded by triggers — gameplay achievements that demonstrate extraordinary skill or planning. Some triggers are documented, others are hidden or variable. Not knowing exactly what earns a token, but knowing that exceptional play increases the odds, creates long-term engagement.
Relief Visualization
Tokens that modify tile behavior use the hexasphere's relief system as visual feedback:
- Double Play: tile at −1 relief quantum (one step below surface)
- Triple Play: tile at −2 quanta (two steps below surface)
- Each word play using the tile raises it by +1 quantum
- At surface level (0 quanta): tile behaves normally for its final use
